Welcome to The Seasoned Cabin!

Hi, I’m Heather Hupfer — food photographer, recipe developer, and year-round cabin dweller living on Oregon’s Mt. Hood.

My husband and I moved to our cabin in 2022. Now, tucked into the woods at nearly 4,000 feet elevation, days are spent preparing for the next season, spending time outdoors and cooking with what’s on hand: pantry staples, preserved goods, wild-foraged finds, and ingredients we’ve stocked up before the snow sets in. We get a lot of snow. So much that we have to leave our car parked about 1.5 miles away and ski or snowshoe in from December (ish) to May!

What You’ll Find Here

  • Tested Recipes for Cabin Life – Each dish is developed and photographed in my own high-elevation kitchen, often shaped by seasonal limitations and longer winters.
  • Mountain Living – From snowshoeing and hiking to foraging huckleberries and splitting firewood, cabin life is woven into every part of this blog.
  • Seasonal Inspiration – Whether we’re snowed in or enjoying our alpine summer, everything I create is grounded in the rhythm of the seasons.

Why You Can Trust My Recipes

With over three decades of experience as a home cook—and professional training in recipe development and food photography—I bring reliable, approachable recipes to the table. I’ve completed the Pretty Focused Food Photography and Recipe Development programs, and I use those skills daily to create dishes that not only work, but look as inviting as they taste.

Each recipe is:

✅ Tested and trustworthy — Developed and refined in my own kitchen with practical, accessible ingredients.
✅ Seasonally flexible — Built around what’s preserved, foraged, or stored in our mountain pantry.
✅ Visually inspiring — Photographed here at the cabin with simple styling and a rustic touch.

My Food Philosophy

  • Simple & Seasonal: Cook with what’s fresh, preserved, or thoughtfully stocked.
  • Tested & Reliable: Recipes that work in real-world kitchens—even at elevation.
  • Gather-Worthy: Memorable food meant to warm the body and share with guests.

More Than Just Recipes

Living in a cabin shapes everything we do—from how we store firewood to what we wear for our outdoor adventures. Here on the blog, I also share:

  • Cooking with cast iron and sourdough
  • Foraging, preserving, and seasonal pantry staples
  • Hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing gear
  • Tiny living, cabin remodeling, and wood storage
  • Mt. Hood cabin life, seasonal rhythms, and quiet inspiration
