Mt Hood has had its first dusting of snow already!

Hurry up and wait. That’s what the woodshed project feels like.

Each step is a huge learning process, but we are finally getting the logs moving!

I’m working on the YouTube video now (another one of those huge learning processes) about how we finally solved the problem that had us stuck for over three weeks.

I keep telling myself, “I only have to learn this part once.” 😅

Our first video is only 3 minutes long, but it’s a start! Please let me know how we did here or on YouTube. I have a lot to learn.
Episode 2 in the works!😜

We bought the mill.
We dropped 20–30 trees.

And then we realized… we had no good way to get the logs from Hayden’s place to the mill on the barn lot.

Some of these logs are over 1,000 pounds, our John Deere is a small subcompact, and using the truck to drag them through the dirt is hard on the sawmill blades.

So we’ve spent the last couple of weeks trying to figure out what to do next.

We’re filming the whole story and I’m finishing up our first YouTube video now.

Follow along- I’ll share the full video as soon as it’s up.

We have over 20 trees down and lots of limbing to do, so naturally my chainsaw decided it was quitting time.

I took it to the shop and ended up having to leave it there. In the meantime we’ve started limbing with hand saws.

We’re racing the snow now and these trees need to be ready to mill!

The past three months have been a blur on the mountain.

Hayden and Nyah moved into their cabin just down the road on a snowy day in May.

We turned our property into a forest wedding venue for Reece and Abbie.

Less than a week later, a logger dropped more than 20 trees on Hayden’s lot.

And somewhere in the middle of all of that, I turned 57 and bought a sawmill.

A sawmill! 😂

Now the trees are on the ground, and we’re limbing and bucking them. We are hoping to build a timber-framed woodshed before the snow flies.

The rest will be milled and saved for Hayden’s cabin renovation next year.

It has been busy, beautiful, exhausting, and very full.

And I’m finally ready to start sharing what has actually been happening around here.

Next up: logs, lumber, sawmilling, a woodshed build, and plenty of cabin life in between.

Follow along here or through Cabin Notes at the link in my bio.

A morning built from scratch. Both sourdough- one

A morning built from scratch. Both sourdough- one raisin with walnut and one plain with honey. Which would you choose?
About a year after we moved to the mountain I started building a morning routine. Little by little the alarm was set just a bit earlier to add that one more thing. It started with coffee and morning pages, then a Bible Study, then some other readings, breakfast for Bob and I, then barre and a hike with Cooper. I just added the toast and tea recently- it comes right after our hike. So far the morning starts at 5:30am and ends around 9:30am.

How do you stack your mornings?

This is Cooper Spur. Her name comes from the mountain we live on. I think she was made for us… and this life.

Meet Heather

Hi, I’m Heather. I live full-time with my husband, Bob, in our 1927 cabin on Mt. Hood. I share the food we cook, the projects we’re working on, life outdoors, and the everyday rhythm of living on the mountain.
